Gross. This was the paid version? In that case I'd like to put forth
PeoplePC. They're a cheap dial-up ISP owned by Earthlink. I've never
used their service, but I have used Earthlink and know that there was a
way to get around using Earthlink's dialer, so I assume there should be
a way to do the same for PeoplePC.
Oh, the merger happened some time ago, but Juno and NetZero still exist
in the same way you can still buy a Compaq, despite the fact that they
were bought out by HP. If you go to the bottom of NetZero and Juno's
web site, you'll notice a link to unitedonline.net which says "$company
is a United Online company".

I just installed NetZero for someone on a Mac just a few weeks ago and
you still have to use their custom dialer. It mucks up all the standard
dialing in the OS. It took me an hour to get it working since they moved
over from a different provider to NetZero. Everything that I remember
about he install was NetZero and not "United Online" so I must be real
recent.

Just so you know, Juno and NetZero merged some time back (to form
"United Online"), so if it comes down to choosing between those two it
(theoretically) shouldn't make a difference. Also, I'm fairly certain
that both did away with their banner ads for paid subscribers well
before the merger.

I had friends who used MStar back in the day (before they went

have recommended it to people who couldn't/didn't want to go
high-speed.

If you are going to pay for NetZero, I wouldn't. It hijacks your
dialer
and requires that you use their NetZero bar when online. I like it
for
the occasional dial-up though. I'd look into Xmission or MStar.

Subject: [uug] Good, inexpensive dial-up ISP
I recently was called to be the computer specialist in my stake
(BYU
19th). One of the buildings where the computers I am responsible
for
are located needs an Internet connection because the church is
moving
most of the missionary application process online. Since the
connection will not need to move huge amounts of data, I am
thinking
that dial-up should be fine.
I would like to find an ISP with a low monthly fee, unlimited
access
(meaning no time limits on usage), and reliable connections
(meaning
no busy signals and no unexpected carrier drops).
So far I have looked at netZero ($9.95) and Juno ($9.95), both of
which seem okay, but I have never used either. I would like some
recommendations / reviews from those of you who use (or have
previously used) dial-up ISPs with access numbers in Provo. Thank
you
for your help.
