You should have come to the meeting last night. :) A straight dd will work just fine. There are just a few tricks. You have to be authenticated with the drive, and there can't be any scratches or ARccOS. In the meeting, we talked about how to deal with these issues. To authenticate, you just have to run a DVD player like mplayer or xine or vlc. To deal with scratches and ARccOS, we used ddrescue.
