Plain text is easier to process. That's important in a list context where the list manager may fall over processing HTML. Mailman can handle HTML now, butif you look at the archive you'll discover it's not always very graceful. It's also polite to stick to plain text when the audience might be doing something insane with procmail. In more intimate conversation, though, I see no problem with HTML. In fact it can be handy. In moderation.
