I haven't used homebrew, but I do like how "the Homebrew tool-chain is  
carefully segregated so you can build stuff by hand but still end up  
with package management."  From what I understand, MacPorts can't do  
this.  It does look like you can do this with Fink (see 
http://finkers.wordpress.com/2009/07/24/creating-local-packages/) 
, but it's pretty cumbersome.

One major downside that homebrew has, however, is the lack dependency  
resolution and update support.  It does seem to help you get chicks,  
though.
