Something would break when I tried to install a package, and I would spend hours looking on Google to figure out what the problem was, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. I haven't had so many problems with Macports. Maybe that's just because of the specific packages I was trying with each one, because I have had at least one problem with Macports (I couldn't get gnuplot to install right). It was also a couple of years ago that I used fink, and it's been a few months since I actually installed something with Macports, so I guess it's more of just "I seem to remember having more problems with fink than I did with Macports." Take that for what it's worth =). It could definitely also be that I was very inexperienced with anything unix-y when I was using fink, and have had an easier time with Macports because I know more of what I'm doing now.
