Typically they are a bit more in-depth than just reading the SMART variables. Maybe involving read and write testing and surface scanning. I've found that Seagate, for example, will much more readily grant an RMA if you provide the exact error message from their analysis software to them. Although I'm sure if you provided the SMART data they'd accept that just as readily.
