I'm with Richard on this one - I use emacs on my box, but vi/vim over ssh. When using emacs -nw over ssh, I've frequently had chords insert weird characters (Ø is one such). Emacs' tramp does allow remote editing, but it's not great if you are doing much more than that (ie. remote development). Emacs shortcuts are quite pervasive, especially in bash. Emacs is very extensible, and I much prefer it for development.
