Ah, sorry - I simply set the mode and tried a couple of things.  While
ctrl-r works in vi mode, I consider it invalid, as it is still the
emacs binding.  As for ctrl-L, it is really esc, ctrl-L, so I missed
it.

And after glancing at the man page, I've discovered that readline
supports macros (emacs bindings only)!  Most excellent!
