This is the worst advice I've heard in a long time. A lot of current, modern linux systems, especially the most exciting projects, are embedded linux systems. And no, they won't be having emacs installed. vi (plain old vi, not even vim) is all you're likely to have. If you can't grok vi, then you're stuck on such systems.
