Cisco can do this as part of their Clean Access technology. It involves actually installing and running a Clean Access client on the computer. On this issue, I think BYU tries its best to be less intrusive while still protecting their network and users, so they instead opt for a java applet on the windows computers identified by their user agent. It grabs everyone who a) runs windows and b) doesn't know how to change their user agent. This probably ends up accounting for 80-90% of their users, and 95+% of the available virus hosts. If you're savvy enough to go messing with your user agent, you're also savvy enough to keep your windows machines updated and virus-free. The switch idea is a good idea. I'd just like to emphasize the point of turning off the DHCP service on the router before you go doing it though. If you don't, OIT will likely find you and disable your internet until they can walk you through installing the router correctly. Personally, I like the 1 computer authenticates all computers so I keep mine as a router, not a switch. I also like the firewall in the router. BYU may be a private network, but it's a large network, and still has viruses and other stuff you'd like to keep away from your computer. Turning off firewalls (even a router) can lead to trouble.
