Vi mode in ZSH is _substantially_ better. Just see the ZSH line editor docs:

I especially like that there is a built-in function to add to your prompt
letting you know if you're in CMD or Insert mode. And with bindkey, you can
add those "must-have" Emacs shortcuts, such as ^r for reverse history
search.
