I know this much in 9.2 (in case you are not in 9.3):

In a new GDB, you can import one of your rasters by right-clicking in the empty GDB, and doing "Import > Raster Datasets..." (surely this functionality is available elsewhere but I don't know where). You can then right-click that raster and do "Load > Load Data..." to select the remaining adjacent rasters and mosaic them to the first one.

Caveats I know of:
- Too many rasters (not sure how many is "too") at once will choke.
- The more tempting option: right-click in empty GDB, "Import > Raster Datasets (mosaic)..." seemed to fail more often, last I tried it. - Arctoolbox has various other analogues and permutations on the above tools, but last I tried they failed more often. They may well be better by now. - Using ArcCatalog to rename a GDB of large rasters, or to rename its (raster) contents, has often killed the GDB for me.
- A GDB can hold far more raster data than an MDB.

I like the idea, but can’t find the option anywhere. I see export to coverage, export to everything other than a single raster. But I’m likely missing it…

Export the catalog to a single raster. There’s an option for that somewhere…

*Subject:* [UW-GIS-L] zonal stats on large raster catalog

Hi all,

I have some 30 rasters in a raster catalog, and I need to get some zonal stats on them. I put them in a catalog b/c I thought it would make it easier to process than mosaicking into a mega raster, or doing individual zonal stats on each raster. But zonal stats won’t let me select the catalog as my value raster. Any ideas?

Yours in GIS ignorance,

Cathy
