Doug,
Exactly ... the lean mixture will leave oxygen burning in the
combustion chamber because we didn't have enough fuel to use it up,
(like getting the cherry with a torch and then pulling the trigger to
cut off the fuel ... leaving only the oxygen when you want to cut
something). This "lean" does make it hotter in the chamber and will
burn a hole in your piston .. and blue the pipes at the first bend ..
it can also melt your exhaust valve ... However, believe it or not ..
if you feel your mufflers when you are running "lean" they will be
cool ... as that heat has pretty much dissipated by the time it gets
to the muffler.
On the other hand .. as you have suggested ... try leaving your choke
on and let the bike idle for an extended period of time ... the
unburnt extra fuel will be pushed into the exhaust pipe and burn at
the point it achieves the correct "blend" ... and will turn the pipe
red/white hot this is cool .. because the ring that it will burn on
your exhaust pipe will move towards the end of the pipe .. depending
on how rich you are ... the richer you are the further it will move
down the pipe. All the drag racers used to tune this way .. use a
crayon on the pipe and where it melts reveals the burn ... They tune
to get the burn exactly at the end of the collector pipe ... Anyhow
... this condition will make your mufflers mucho hot ... and you will
also hear the "report" exiting the exhaust .. making the "richer" bike
sound "louder" ... Honest !!
