@svenpanne: I'm not sure what the burden of proof would be to establish that "object-like notions of functions are irrelevant for your program, the lifting is simply an incorrect transformation." How does the object like notation for functions obscure the underlying byte code triggered when you call them.

Can you think of a function definition lacking non-local variables that would act differently in these two contexts?

var fn = funciton () { "use strict"; ...stuff... };

for (;;) {
  call_fn( fn );
}

from,

for (;;) {
  call_fn( funciton () { "use strict"; ...stuff... } );
}
