at #17: just FYI you understood the example wrong. It is not the definition of 'fn' that makes a difference, but the definition of 'call_fn', the caller. If the caller uses the identity of 'fn' the discussed optimization cannot be applied, and it does not matter at all what 'fn' itself does.
