I don't know whether my finding works for you. I have similar problem on VM.
I can't set higher resolution on Gnome. Later I found the resolution will be
set automatically by increasing the window size of VM dragged with the mouse
pointer. The bigger the size of the VM window the higher the resolution of the
display.
