I did not like the idea of Oracle buying Sun because I valued Sun as an
independent developer. Of course, Sun itself swallowed up MySQL and VirtualBox
but kept them open. Oracle has more of a (legitimate) vested interest in
closed products (excellent, industry leaders!) that compete with FOSS
products. Of course, any corporation needs to set priorities for its
development projects so let us be fair.

Our use and support of FOSS products, the strength in numbers and industry-
wide acceptance, will keep them in priority's eye. Java is here to stay. MySQL
is a threat to Oracle's own proprietary product but has such a wide base that
it will not go away either. Vbox has a proprietary product as well so the
dual-level business model might keep it going, but Vmware is the main,
accepted visualization platform so Oracle could have second thoughts about it.
Openoffice, the original dual-level product, should not have been endangered
but such a suite has become such a large project ... Where Oracle will take it
and what will be with the Libreoffice branch, the future will tell.

I like netbeans, hope they keep it. Eclipse, not jdevelop, is its main
competition and Eclipse and anything done on it is just too big. The other
IDEs have their devotees but that just makes them get better and better.

Opensolaris is the main point of contention in all this fud-dy-duddy. I
personally think that the FOSS community is a large asset to these distros but
Oracle needs to proprietize.

Worst enemy of opensource? Hardly. The powerhouse champion? Future will tell.
Google seems committed to OSS but there is a price for all their machinations
as well. And Microsoft? Who knows--they did not hound Lindows out of existence
for nothing :-)
