I've been happily using Quicken etc. in a WinXP guest under Virtualbox running on Mandriva 2010.2 for many months. Very slick.
Unhappily, since installing VBox 4.04 I've been experiencing so much disk thrashing after firing up any application (including XP Control Center) that for the first few mouse-click selections it can be 1-2 minutes before I can do the next one. In the meantime the hard drive light is constantly on (but no internet activity). After 4 or 5 of these slow-motion actions, they gradually speed up and eventually everything is back to normal speed. This disk activity only occurs during (and at the start of) the first application started in the VBox session. (Sometimes it was 2-3 minutes after selecting the app before the app started.) It does not occur in Mandriva before VBox is started or after it terminates. When VBox 4.06 appeared I tried that, hoping it might have solved some problem, but no. So I have reverted to VBox 4.02, with which - so far - the problem has not recurred. Was there some change in Vbox 4.04 that might -in certain circumstances - cause the start of session disk thrashing? -- Maurice Batey (Retired in Surrey, UK) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WhatsUp Gold - Download Free Network Management Software The most intuitive, comprehensive, and cost-effective network management toolset available today.
