But since this is due to crashing applications running under the guest OS, you might just temporarily enable Apport [1] to get a crash log (it might be helpful to re-install the Guest Additions from the Ubuntu repository in this case, since the symbols will match). Even if this is a VirtualBox issue the information will be useful.
