Apport's enabled & I managed to crash unity-panel-service & now have
data in /var/crash. But I'm not sure that it's relevant at all; there
are no crashes at startup & I only managed to crash it with a '$ unity
--replace' command.

I suspect it's something else that is wonkey; perhaps video settings. If
I Ctrl-Alt-F1 I can't make out the text on the screen (even after
uncommenting GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 in /etc/default/grub.

Given:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity
which are bugs reported against Unity outside of VBox, I reckon it will
be awhile before I sort it out w/VBox...
