I am still baffled by this.  I am now running kernel 3.5.3, and tried  
adding in a bunch of networking options like bridging, vlan, and tun/ 
tap support to no avail.

How can I find out why virtualbox isn't bringing up the interface  
properly for a host-only network?

Any random shots in the dark I can check?
