What is vague - what further details may I provide? I am happy to
comply with any request... I'm really not sure what else may be
useful but am happy to dig up whatever information I can. What is
esoteric? I'm just trying to use one of the standard networking modes
of VirtualBox and it doesn't work without manual intervention... I'd
live with manually bringing up the interface and not worrying about
it, however the interface does not come into existence when the
virtualbox kernel modules are loaded - it only comes into existence
when the first VM is started and fails to come up properly, so I can't
just do a manual workaround without pain - I have to boot up some VM
in a broken state first. :/

I may do that actually. Can you speak for the quality of their
support? I have honestly never even looked into the commercial option
of VirtualBox or the pricing, but I'm generally a very happy user of
it for a long time now. :)

I can try that too, but I kind of doubt that it has to do with the
distribution, as except for those that like to heavily patch their
kernels, it's pretty standard - just a collection of certain versions
of packages. What is different in my case is that I started with a
pretty minimal kernel and set of packages whereas most distributions
will pack in everything but the kitchen sink, which is why I was
curious if there were some known dependencies that might not be
checked for at compile-time. I would expect there to be an error
logged somewhere in any case, and am not sure I know all the right
places to check for that.

Cheers,
