True, but in the case of Windows activation, a test for one PC and
Windows version might not tell you much about the same test on another
PC or Windows version.

If I understand it correctly, a single hardware change might be the
final cumulative change needed to trigger re-activation, if other
previous changes had been made.

One person could report: "I changed the network card and it was OK",
somebody else could report: "I changed a hard disk drive and it was
OK", and somebody else "I changed my motherboard but kept my HDD and
PCI network card and it was OK" and we might incorrectly conclude that
all of those could be changed and all would be OK.

same or similar hardware that it was activated on. If it detects that
the hardware is "substantially different", reactivation is required."

There is less technical info available about Vista or 7 activation.
