Hi Bruce,

Ok, let me check that I clearly understand what you have setup.
1. You have the latest VBox installed (VirtualBox-4.3.20-96996).
2. You have the matching Extension Pack installed
(Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.20-96996.vbox-extpack).
3. You have some guest OS installed with the corresponding Guest Additions
installed.
4. In the Guest settings you’ve setup the USB ports by enabling the USB
controller and the USB 2 controller.

Then, with or without the guest running, in the GUI settings under Ports/USB
you don’t show any devices, correct?

What happens when you click on the “+” button on the right side of the devices
window? It should show every USB device on the host OS including the Thumb
drive if it is inserted. Select the one you want to attach to and check the box
on the left to enable the guest to access it. Depending on the guest OS you may
have to reboot the guest OS to get it to see the just setup device assuming
that the guest drivers for the device are installed.

Something else to check is that, with the guest running, the VBox Devices/USB
drop down menu should show all USB devices on the host OS regardless of whether
the guest has access to them or not. In my case I see the Thumb drive, but it
is greyed out because I don’t have it enabled for the guest at this time so I
can use it on the host.

All the above is the same for all host OSs. I’m actually running OSx as the
host, but it is very similar to Linux. If your setup is as listed above and you
don’t see any USB devices with the thumb drive inserted then your problem is
beyond me.

Hope this helps.

Cliff
