3.) correct (for the record, it's a windows guest.)
4.) correct

with the guest RUNNING, I use the devices menu item to attempt to attach the 
thumb drive.  There is no check box and where a list of devices should be, I 
see "no devices
attached".  The host is Linux running opensuse 13.2 (kernel 3.17.1-53).  The 
thumb drive IS recognized by the host system and can be mounted, (although is 
not mounted).

It's very weird to me and I'm not sure where to go with this
