I have had this problem in the past with newly installed virtualbox.  Go to
whatever GUI tool your flavour of Linux provides for "Users and Groups "
and ensure that the user that is launchung VirtualBox is a member of the
vboxusers group.  Oddly the VirtualBox extension functions like USB, shared
clipboard etc. seem the only functions affected by not being a member of
the vboxusers group.  Non-members can launch Virtual machines just fine.
