Finally I was able to find time to check whether this issue is reproducible for
me.
I had installed fresh Kubuntu 17.04 on my HiDPI laptop (HP Envy with 3840x2160
screen). Then updated everything.
To be sure we have similar setup, fresh after installation I had scaled host
fonts up to 192dpi and Kubuntu icons to be twice larger. That’s all.
Then I tried VBox with WinXP, Win7 and Win10 guests.
I was not able to reproduce the issue with WinXP or Win10, but I have something
with Win7 (with WDDM driver).
Here with the Win7 guest I am unable to adjust guest-screen up to host-screen
resolution in full-screen mode only, the usual black margins *around* the guest
content (not just to the right and below, but from each side). I can resize
guest-screen in usual (non full-screen) mode up to maximum (which is less than
available area but quite close to it). Maximized machine-window gets
guest-screen adjusted properly, but full-screen is not. That happens only if
Win7 have WDDM driver installed within the Guest Additions package (enable
Direct3D Support check-box during GA installation then answer NO, that will
install WDDM). If XPDM driver is installed (for that do not enable Direct3D
Support check-box during GA installation) I have no such issue with Win7.
Opposing to Win7, Win10 guest goes with WDDM by default (during GA
installation) but I have no any resize issues with Win10 at all. Guest being
resized up to full host-screen resolution here. I would also note that I have
no custom scaling factor set for VM window (it’s 1.0 by default) so guest
resolution in full-screen mode equal to host-resolution for me. Maximum Guest
Screen Size option from Global VBox Properties set to None.
As I understand that’s not the case you have there, on your host the situation
is much worse. It’s worth creating public VirtualBox defect and provide us with
VBox.log and screenshots/videos of the issue you have.

Dear Sergey,
sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Setting the environment variable
affects the appearance of the virtualbox manager and causes the VM to start in
an even smaller part of the screen (literally a stamp-sized box in the middle
of the screen). Once fully loaded, it resizes, but just to original faulty
behaviour, with no change from there on.

There is HiDPI scaling support flag in the underlaying Qt library.
It can be forced by setting environment variable QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR to
1 (right before starting VM).

I have a Linux host, the guests are Windows. But there is clearly
something going wrong which usually gets handled automatically,
presumably due to the combination of new hardware or the new version
17.04 of the host OS KUbuntu.
