I think you summed it up pretty well: you're dealing with an extreme case. If I were to prioritize democratically (not that it's up to me mind you), I would not give much effort to supporting an extreme; I would look for features which would satisfy most of the users, not a small percentage. I think you would agree that no company has an endless number of resources. Also, given what you're trying to do, is it really in the spirit of the PUEL? I think if you want something super scalable, your company should buy the product and lobby that way _or_ dedicate some people to improve the Open Source solution.
