And it was really very very simple. I am using a pptp connection to ADSL through a ethernet modem. eth0 cannot masquerade or bridge to tap0. It can read it but not write it for whatever reason. ppp0 does it using iptables or bridging. (I made /dev/ippp0 666--needed?) Voile.
