Sorry, the problem turns out to be with Ubuntu not VirtualBox. 

Their suggested minimum system is too small (boosting the RAM allows swap
partition to be created) and their 6.10 server install is faulty (boot hangs
with "Unknown interrupt or fault at EIP 00000060 c0100295 00000294" which is
well documented on the web)
