I took the following steps, as suggested:
1 Placed the expression return 0 in the first line of /etc/rc.d/init.d/vboxdrv
2.   rebooted
3   preserved the dmesg text, as attached
4. Attempted to use /sbin/modprobe vboxdrv to install vboxdrv manually. 5. The program showed no cpu cycles in ps -ef for 5 minutes, so I terminated it. There was no reponse or output.
