David,
Thanks for referral. I tried yor solution but in ubuntu it doesn't work.
The problem is that the USB-ports are seen but apparently they cannot accessed. I think the problem is in the host, not relieving it's hold on the device. If I, e.g. attach an Cruzero USB-stick, the host grasps it and the guest can't reach it. The result is that I can open the device in my host, but not in my guest, although the device menu shows the device but greyed out. I don't know which mechanism takes care of giving control to the guest. It must be some mechanism in virtualbox that at least must have root privileges. The strange thing is that when the guest is stopped I can add a filter with the name of the device, etc. Another thing is that in ubuntu jaunty (and hardy 8.04 LTS) the name usbfs is not known.
I hope a somebody can help me further.
Joep

I think it is correct to give an update on my problem with USB ports.
I tried several of the suggestions given on this list as well as in the referred solutions on the internet but none did work. As I had the idea that the installation wasn't quite uneventful I decided to remove virtualbox which I downloaded directly from the Sun site and reinstall it from the ubuntu repositories. Although it doesn't show in the Applications -> System Tools tab any more, starting it from a console let me tag the device I wanted and it works now in W XP. The only (small problem that remains it it doesn't see the USB stick I also inserted but when I want to tag it a window pops up telling me that I have to change something in the usbfs setup).
My main problem is solved however.
Thanks everybody who gave his time and attention to my problem.
Joep
