Well, there is what I consider a bug in the way VertualBox handles
USB. If it find the older /proc/bus/usb with the usbfs mounted on
it, it uses that instead of libusb to access USB devices. If it does
not find it, then it uses the newer libusb to access USB devices.
Because Ubuntu and Fedora both support both methods of access, it
uses the "wrong" one. This is why remounting the usbfs as described
in the manual, fixes the problem you are running into.
