I have a windows 7 64-bit host, vbox was 3.0.12

created a vm named centos basic configuration, 1 nic, NAT, intel pro
1000 adapter.

I use the net install of centos 5.4 and the net install cd could not
get a dhcp address with this configuration, I shut off the vm played
with adapter settings and finally found that the pcnet III card seemed
to work well. and I was able to get a dhcp address and do the net
install.

created a second vm called ubuntu for the latest ubuntu, installed
that from the downloaded iso and it seemed to have the same problem
with networking, and the same solution solved it.

when I created my third vm for FreeBSD even the pcnet III adapter
could not get a dhcp address, and I had to back down to a pcnet II for
that to work.

I have to say, that when networking works, it seems to work well.

Then I upgraded vbox to 3.1.0 and none of the above settings still worked.

tried other network adapters and could not find one that worked. My
biggest problem here was time, I was "under the gun" to get it working
again and I didnt have a lot of time to play around.

This is my dev box, and I needed to get it back to running so I could
work on something else.

Anyway, I ran out of time before I found a suitable configuration, so
I uninstalled 3.1.0 and reinstalled 3.0.12 and went back to something
I knew worked.

I havent had the time to retest networking on the 3.1.0 stuff. and
quite frankly I'm not looking forward to it.

Generally speaking when networking works for me, I can ping, www, ssh,
etc no trouble. But when networking does not work, none of it works.

Its a binary situation for me, either it works, or it doesnt, and
there doesnt seem to be a middle ground.

My preference would be to emulate a gigabit adapter, as there actually
is one one the host box and when I am connected to a real gigabit net,
it would be nice to have access to that inside the guests as well.
