Tony, you just hit part of it. If the customer will pay for flies made by a person of note and come back each year the tier will do a bit better. I have 4 surgeons and 2 dentists I tie all their flies, they don't dick around on the price, they order in January and want them in May.

Chuck,
This sounds like I am blowing my own horn so don't take it that way. I
was getting the premium for my flies at the shops because I tied them. A
lot of them were bought as collectors flies. This also happens at shows.
At the Conclave last week I had a tyer say I will take your fly because
you tied it. Others tell me the fly will never see the water. Had a guy
come over and showed me two small plastic bags with flies in them. He
bought them at a resort that had my name on the bags. He wanted to
verify that they were flies I tied. There were a dozen of the same flies
in each bag.. It is the same with the bamboo rods. I had a student that
wanted me to sell a rod he made. I took it to three shows trying to sell
it for him. I got the same thing, If I was going to buy a bamboo rod, I
would have you make it for me. I never got to sell it.
There are others out there like that, it is the name that commands the
price. I really don't think I am in that category but I guess there are
others that think I do.

Alan: I guess so. I can still get hooks now for $6.00/100, but even
at that price, you'd have to tie a LOT of flies to make any real
money. Specially at places like ebay where if the certain auction
ends with a no sale, you still have to pay a relisting fee to list
them again. Do that 2-3 times and you're going in the hole. One way
my wife helps with her leader auctions is to run them in a "run it
till it sells" type auction and puts say, 10, or 25 etc under the
"number available". That must be what those guys have to do. Do
flies in fly shops sell for a lot more than the prices I quoted from
the ebay auctions I listed?? If so, I guess if a person had a few
fly shops that they "contracted" with, then I guess they could make
better money. Then again, the ppl who buy at those shops would
probably insist on better quality flies, hooks etc right?? Thanks, Chuck

Perhaps the hooks are ones they bought on eBay a long time ago
        at very cheap,prices.

I know that is the case with me.

Folks: This is a question for ppl who have ever, or do now,
sell flies. I have been searching ebay, and other sites, and
the ppl on there sell their flies, mostly just pretty simple
patterns for only 6/$2.99 up to about 6/$5.95 tops. Plus
either free shipping, or 45 cents, or maybe 75 cents or a
dollar tops. Now, any hooks alone that are name brand, unless
they are having a great sale, are gonna run ya up to a about
15.8 cents each @ $3.95/25 pack . So, how do these ppl make
ANY money at all like this?? Or are they just doing it to try
to recoup some money on a hobby they enjoy doing anyway??
        Thanks, Chuck
