An onstream device that's proven to be quite effective is the Fly
Trap, replacing the sheepskin patch.  Haven't lost a single fly in
the four seasons since I bought it.  Often, flies would just drop off
the old sheepskin, especially barbless hooks.  Flies dry out quickly
in it, thanks to good venting.  

Now that I'm practiced at using the Ketchum Release, there's little
need to carry a net.  It took more than a few tries to get good at
it, though.  But now it's a necessity.  (For big ones that I want to
photograph, I use a Landing Hand, which is like a glove of net
material.)
