I can think readily of about 8 ways to use
horsehair for bodies:
Single-strand midge body segments
Multistrand with diff. colors- flat for quill
appearance
Multistrand roped for segmented look- can furl for
extended bodies, dragonflies...
Multistrand square-knot weaved like JimmyD's
longhorn stonefly
Belly-weave multistrand with a dubbing brush for
scuds and shrimp- ala Potts flies +
Polish weave for sowbugs and stones- diff. color
over/under
Large bunch tied in @ tail and pulled forward,
with
follow-up wrap for segments- whole tail one color
Same as above, but only the top half for upper
linear lines, like the pull-over on a humpy,
then segmented with the follow-up
wrap. needs a belly material.
Need more, let me know. Some horse hair is
translucent and can thus be used with undercolors & tinsels for special
effects. I tied some rusty scuds with some redish-chestnut horsehair
and they were killer, but the horse moved away. {:
