I use a drill press. There are four types of foam that I use. I say four types, but really they are the same type, just different ways of buying it.
1) Flip flop foam
2) Foam letters and numbers from target, or toys r us
3) Foam blocks from Wapsi (same foam as edgewater sells, or Larry tullis sells for his wiggle bugs)
4) Foam Yoga bricks
All these are dense EVA foam. The foam blocks are very much the same as the ones rainy's uses or edgewater uses to make their popper bodies. It works great, I use Jim Hatch's dremel method for making the bodies. This guy sells some great colors, he also sells expensive punches, but I don't like them because the punches have a drill bit in the middle of it, too big for the needle I use on my lathe. Here is his link, these are the same blocks wapsi sells, but Steve has better colors. http://www.jvlnet.com/~swinters/
He Is a good guy to deal with.
Here is also a link to making bodies. This is the article explaining everything you need to know.
