I have feathers from the 60's that are still good.  also a couple of ladies fox fur collars

Every bit of fur or feather i get, no matter which manufacurer's lable is on the packet, goes into the freezer for a week soon as i get it home.  even if it was originally bug free it will have passed through various storage and transport and may have contacted bug infested materials.

Everything is stored in airtight bags or containers.

Mothballs --- cut a 1/4 inch hole in the end of a 35mm film canister's insert two mothballs and distribute these round storage boxes.

I once saw a piece of deer hair in a plastic bag in a dealers that was visibly crawling with bugs.

iain

I recently heard that the life of feathers is only about 10 years and hairs and furs up to 15 years. Is this true? Any long time tiers have an idea for shelf life of materials?
Thanks,
