After 2 days the wind dropped and sun came out giving us a 75 temperature so I headed off down to the sea to fish.
A variety of fish can be caught here with mullet and bream being most common, none of the Cypriots had ever seen a fly rod. I tried Streamers without a bite; I tried shrimp patterns without luck, but eventually had several odd looking fish on a bead head GRHE. Next day I tried a bread fly for mullet #16 hook with a tuft of white CDC topped with ginger CDC. The locals all use bread for bait; usually float fished so the fish are used to seeing bread. A few small mullet and only one 1.5 pounder fell to this fly.
When the wind picked up I switched to bread bait and caught mullet and a couple of unidentified odd looking fish.
If you�re interested in trying you luck fishing in TRNC boats can be hired to take you into deeper water about � mile out with bigger and better fish. A Salmon spinning rod would be ok here.
A 7 to 9 foot Telescopic bait casting rod and reel rated 1 ounce with 7 pound line is as big as you would need off the shore and size 8-10 hooks.
Hotel Pia Bella in Kyrenia is clean and modern with nice staff and reasonably priced.
Police are everywhere mostly trying to keep the traffic moving in the narrow streets but are outnumbered by the militia and regular army; at no time did this ever feel oppressive as they are all friendly and helpful. There are speed limits which are enforced! Do not drink and drive! Streets are safe for everyone day or night.
Children are really safe here � NO ONE touches children
The US Dollar, Euro or British Pounds are acceptable at ALL shops, bars and hotels. Car hire is cheap with full insurance and damage waver for 15 pounds per day.
The TRNC is very quiet, safe, and restful but there is little to do but eat drink and fish so if you fancy ending your days as a fat drunk angler you may well feel at home here.
