Pete, the original is upright and divded far as the dry fly goes. The wet is a clump. I've never seen the one you describe. Only advantage i can think of is ..a faster tye. You didn't say which way the hackle is wraped, ah la para, or the traditional way. Far as what Jeff said, it is the tail and hackle that "Balanced" the traditional tye. In reality the old fashioned tye (traditional) isn't anything that was ever that accurate as far as a "true" representation is concerned. When have you EVER seen a mayfly floating down a river with it's wings spread out like a traditional Catskill style fly is tyed. Thank you. So, in that sense a parachute is a better representation. Although a parachute has the hackle on top, NOT what a real bug has, but it does allow the fly to ride lower, giving the impression of legs in it's "sillowette." I'd just say pretty much what i always say about the two styles. Use the Catskill style in faster water, when and where you need to be able to see it better. And use the parachute style in slower or calmer water, where the fish can get a good (better) look at it. mark....

Hi everyone,
I was tying up a batch of Catskill flies and wanted to know... in the Light Cahill pattern, it was my understanding that the mallard-flank wing was split and figured-8ed. However, a friend of mine recently showed me his, and the mallard-flank is tied in a pseudo-parachute/ clump fashion (without splitting the wing clump, but not wrapped around the base as for a parachute, nor figure-8ed). Now I'm sure the trout don't mind much (he's caught #s on it), but my curiousity has me asking:

What was the original recipie? and
What benefit might one pose over the other?

Just curious for your input. Tight wraps,
Pete
