broadcast2000 only edits quicktime files.  You can convert a mpeg to
quicktime with qdvt (http://www.ee.up.ac.za/~justin/videostuff), then
edit it, then convert back, but you lose quality with each conversion,
so I wouldn't recomend this.

MainActor (I think http://www.mainconcept.com/) can edit mpeg, but it
isn't freeware.  It also battles with really long MPEGs.
