Are you using bttv, or some other driver (i.e. do you know your driver supports
VIDEO_PALETTE_GREY)?

Are you running X in 16bpp TrueColor mode?

Are you using a camera or TV video source? Which card input are you using?

Are you using NTSC or PAL?

How about vidrgb - does that work? What about xawtv?
