I don't know what "the Gtk clipboard" might be. On my system, + is for whatever is used for "Edit => Copy", "Edit => Cut" and "Edit => Paste" in any X11 programs regardless of whether or not they are using Gtk widgets (Konqueror, for instance, uses Qt widgets and it has access to that same clipboard). I don't use the * register but I've been told it's used by middle-mouse pasting.
