The words I should be using are "they're" and "lose". I'd like to have
these highlighted as rare words (not because they are rare, rather
because I rarely use rare words, so this seems a reasonable pigeon-hole

rare word highlighting and my brain would kick into its "read this
sentence carefully mode."
I've done the following:
- Created ~/.vim/spell/en-rare.latin1.add
- Written these words into the file (attached)
- Run :mkspell !~/.vim/spell/en-rare.latin1.add (no errors)
I do not think the file name counts. What I do is use only one
spelling file (en.utf-8.add in my case), and affix the rare words with
"/?", like:
they're/?
Maybe you can have a try.
