Using "ss", some words get a different meaning, e.g. "Maße" vs. "Masse".
Although in most (if not all) cases context should make it clear which
meaning applies.
Maße (measure) vs. Masse (mass) is indeed a famous case, as in "A beer brewed
with art, should be consumed with measure" (...in Maße), which becomes "...in
massive quantities" (in Masse). ;-) I guess that slogan must be banned from
Switzerland, where "ß" is normally always written as "ss".
