IIUC, it isn't so recent. I think it was already so before the latest reform (entered into force 1-Aug-1998, supposedly mandatory since 1-Aug-2005, but [IIUC] still not accepted by everyone). I have reason to believe that that atlas I spoke about was printed before the 1901-02 reform.

Maße (measure) vs. Masse (mass) is indeed a famous case, as in "A beer brewed with art, should be consumed with measure" (...in Maße), which becomes "...in massive quantities" (in Masse). ;-) I guess that slogan must be banned from Switzerland, where "ß" is normally always written as "ss".
