I am sure there is a way to suppress all the drawing until after
everything has 'settled'; VIM only knows if the GUI was started
correctly or not; it having been drawn on does not mean the drawing is
visible (nor, I think, is it necessary for it to be visible in order
for the GUI to be called "started")
