Yet another experiment: This Linux distribution comes with vim 7.4.160 in /usr/bin/vim, so I repeated the experiments I tried before and it worked just fine in all cases. So the problem is with vim, not its environment, and it was introduced sometime between 7.4.160 and 8.0.1203.
