Maybe I was just not patient enough: after subscribing to this list a
week ago and not receiving list messages since (as described above), I
eventually started receiving messages today...

To summarise what I found out using trial and error (i.e. what possibly
is absolute nonsense):

When trying to subscribe a new address to a vim mailing list by sending
mail to the appropriate *[email protected] address you can either

a) reply to the subscription confirmation message by email and ignore
   the "We know you are excited ..." message you'll receive afterwards,

or

b) use the HTTP URL given in the subscription confirmation message.

However, if the address you use to subscribe has previously been
subscribed and you choose a) to confirm your subscription, wait for a
few days / weeks / months / lives before complaining about receiving
no list messages ;-)
