I'm sympathetic to your point, however I'm pretty sure there is
no option in Google Groups to control attachments. Therefore, as
Raúl noted, there is unfortunately no practical way to prevent
large attachments.

I'm certain that someone who would send a 2.6M attachment to a
mailing list won't read our guidelines in advance, so I don't
think updating them is worthwhile (and I've tried to keep the
guidelines reasonably short for clarity, so adding a "stating
the obvious" paragraph about how you shouldn't post large
attachments does not appeal). However:

http://groups.google.com/group/vim_use/web/vim-information
currently includes:
  No attachments (except for patches, or a file that
  someone requested on the list).

So the guidelines already cover the situation reasonably well.
